THE FLAVORS OF CIGARS BY COUNTRY
United States:
Two large varieties of tobacco come from the
United States. The Connecticut shade has brownish yellow leaves that are very
soft and produces a mild to medium smoke. Broadleaf Connecticut has a dark,
almost black leaf that is much more veined than the Connecticut shade.
Mexico:
Most Mexican tobacco leaves are used as under
wraps and filler for cigars. The tobacco they produce is a variant of
Sumatra-seed tobacco. Mexican cigars are typically made from 100% locally grown
tobacco.
The
Dominican Republic:
The tobacco leaves of the Dominican Republic
have improved considerably over the past twenty years. Most of the tobacco that
comes from the Dominican Republic comes from Cuban seed varieties. Although
Dominican tobacco is not as strong as Cuban tobacco, it has great flavor and is
generally used in complex mixtures.
Cuba:
Everyone knows or has heard of a Cuban cigar,
before the revolution of Dominican and Nicaraguan cigars, Cuban tobacco has
been recognized as one of the best tobaccos in the world. Cuban tobacco leaves
are strong and solid, with spicy and aromatic flavors that make the Cuban cigar
famous.
Ecuador:
The second finalist for its high quality tobacco
leaves is Ecuador. Ecuador's tobacco is used for both filler and capes.
Nicaragua:
The highest quality Cuban seeds and Connecticut
tobacco seeds come from this Central American country. Nicaragua produces
full-bodied tobacco with strong spicy flavors and heady aromas.
Cameroon:
This area of West Africa is known for its high
quality of tobacco leaves. Cameroon's tobacco comes from the Sumatran seed that
was imported from Indonesia. It is known for its neutral characteristics,
making it an ideal cape for full-bodied guts.
Indonesia:
Sumatra tobacco comes from the series of islands
that make up Indonesia. Their tobacco is sometimes referred to as Java or
Sumatra. Sumatra capes produce a rather neutral taste, making them perfect for
soft cigars.
Philippines:
Tobacco from the Philippines is a sweet tobacco that
is used in all their cigars. This sweet tobacco is a hybrid strain produced in
the Philippines and is very aromatic.
